8 Reasons To Do A First Look
While reading this article you may quickly realize I am a BIG fan of first looks. From a wedding photographer’s perspective, a first look opens up more options and flexibility throughout the day. But also as someone who just got married, the first look was my favorite moment of the wedding day. I truly believe every couple should think very hard about the benefits before saying no to a first look on their wedding day. Here are eight reasons to take into consideration…
#1 Timeline Options

Since I already quickly touched on this I will jump into the timeline benefits a first look offers on your wedding day. When a couple has a first look before their ceremony it allows for a large majority of images to be shot before they start their day with their friends and family. Once a first look is complete your wedding photographer can jump into the newlywed portraits, which can then be followed by the wedding party photos. It is great to get these out of the way before your ceremony even begins!
#2 More Time Spent With Guests

Jumping right from the timeline options reflects how you get to spend more time with your guests on your wedding day if you have a first look. Since the newlywed portraits and wedding party photos are already captured before the ceremony begins that gives you an extra hour with your guests. After the ceremony, the only time you would be away from your cocktail hour now is for the family formals. Not only as a PEI wedding photographer do I love this, but I know my couples always really appreciate this on their wedding day.
#3 Fresh Hair & Makeup

It's no secret that hair and makeup can look slightly different in the morning to the end of the day. A lot of brides are happy to get the majority of their formal pictures done before their ceremony so their hair and makeup are fresh for the images. Your partner will see you directly after you are done getting ready and then you can do some touch-ups before the ceremony begins. If you wait until after the ceremony to get the majority of the images captured, most brides don’t have a lot of time to do touch-ups.
#4 Ceremony Later in the Day

If you are getting married in the summer, outdoors, you and your guests may be extremely warm during the ceremony. PEI is known for the HOT humid summer days and sometimes this can get forgotten during winter wedding planning. Your guests (and wedding party) may appreciate having the ceremony when it has cooled off around 4-5 pm instead of 2 pm when the sun is at its hottest. Or even better, consider waiting close to sunset to get those dreamy pink and orange tones in the sky.
#5 Fewer Nerves Going Down the Aisle

Speaking from personal experience, I do not remember a single thing from walking down the aisle on my wedding day. I was SO nervous standing in front of so many people, it is completely blocked out of my memory. I am so glad my husband and I had a first look so I have that special memory, but I also didn’t add to the pressure of seeing each other for the first time when walking down the aisle.
#6 Raw Emotion

Many people are not comfortable sharing their vulnerable emotions in front of a large audience. Having a first look on your wedding day provides both you and your partner the opportunity to be vulnerable with one another. You can cry, laugh, and share memories without 100 eyes on you. In previous experiences, I have found men to really tense up during the ceremony but are big teddy bears when alone with their partner.
#7 Intimate Time Together

If you’re having a large wedding, you may not actually get to spend that much time with your partner on the wedding day. Between formal images, greeting guests, speeches, and dancing with friends, one on one time with each other quickly gets lost. A first look allows the two of you to be alone and take in the moment with just each other. Something you may really cherish when looking back on your PEI wedding day.
#8 More Variety

From a PEI wedding photographer's perspective, my goal is to give you a beautiful wedding gallery. The more little moments there are, the more variety you may find in the final gallery. A first look is a great way to tell the beginning of your story and allows for different backgrounds to be photographed.
